Music

We were in Barnes and Noble the other day and I saw Wicked, the book by Gregory McGuire. I thought for a moment, but I didn’t get it.

I love the soundtrack too much and I just know that the book will be different from the musical.

I don’t know where it started. I don’t watch the Tony awards, so I’m usually not up on even semi current Broadway stuff. But suddenly there it was, the story of two witches in school and the different paths they end up taking.

Sometimes, I’m right there with them. Who wouldn’t like to declare that they were defying gravity and no one was going to bring them down now and then?

It’s the end though that gets me. There is a moment when they are singing:

Who can say if I’ve been changed for the better
But
Because I knew you
I have been changed
For good

I always wonder if I had that kind of impact on anyone. I’m in my thirties now, school long behind me.

Still it would be nice, wouldn’t it? To have changed someone’s life “for good”.

You can have It’s a Wonderful Life. I’ll keep my musicals.

Who else will express things so beautifully?
